Wall Decoration and Art Arrangement Tips

Let's talk about wall decoration— it's one of those things that can completely transform a space, yet it's often the last thing we think about. I remember when I first moved into my apartment; I spent weeks choosing furniture and paint colors, but I left my walls bare for months. It wasn't until I started adding art and decor that the space really started to feel like home.

Over the years, I've learned a thing or two about wall decoration and art arrangement. Today, I'm sharing my best tips to help you create a wall that tells your story and makes your space feel uniquely yours.

Start with What You Love

The most important rule of wall decoration? Choose pieces that you love! Don't worry about trends or what's 'in'— focus on art and decor that speaks to you. I have a mix of prints, photographs, and even a few small tapestries that I've collected over the years, and each piece has a special meaning to me.

One of my favorite finds? A vintage botanical print that I picked up at a flea market. It's not worth much money, but it makes me happy every time I look at it. That's the power of choosing art that you love!

Create a Gallery Wall

Gallery walls are a great way to display multiple pieces of art in a cohesive way. I created one in my living room, and it's become the focal point of the space. The key to a successful gallery wall is to plan it out before you start hammering nails.

I like to lay all my pieces out on the floor first to find the perfect arrangement. I also make sure to mix different sizes and styles— it adds visual interest. And don't forget to leave some negative space between pieces! You don't want your wall to feel cluttered.

Think About Scale

Scale is important when it comes to wall decoration. A tiny piece of art on a large wall will look lost, while a huge piece on a small wall will overwhelm the space. I like to follow the 2/3 rule— your art should be about 2/3 the width of your furniture.

For example, above my sofa, I have a large canvas print that's about 2/3 the width of the sofa. It creates a balanced look that feels just right. If you have a large wall and don't want one big piece, a gallery wall is a great alternative.

Mix Different Mediums

Don't be afraid to mix different mediums when decorating your walls. I have a mix of framed prints, unframed canvases, and even a few hanging planters. The mix of textures and materials adds depth and interest to the space.

One of my favorite combinations? A framed photograph next to a small tapestry. The contrast between the smooth photo and the textured tapestry is really striking. And don't forget to add some three-dimensional elements! A wall sconce or a hanging shelf can add another layer to your wall decor.

Don't Forget About Height

One of the most common mistakes I see in wall decoration is hanging art too high. The general rule is that the center of your art should be at eye level— about 57-60 inches from the floor. That way, it's easy to appreciate without having to crane your neck.

Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. If you have high ceilings, you can hang art a bit higher to draw the eye upward. And in a dining room, you might want to hang art a bit lower so it's at eye level when you're sitting down.

Add Personal Touches

Your walls should reflect your personality and tell your story. That's why I love adding personal touches to my wall decor. I have a few framed photographs of my family and friends, as well as some of my own artwork.

I also like to rotate my wall decor seasonally. In the spring, I add a few floral prints; in the fall, I switch to warmer tones and nature-inspired pieces. It's a simple way to keep your space feeling fresh and updated.
