As a proud pet parent to two rescue dogs and a cat, I know firsthand that designing a home that works for both humans and pets can be a challenge. I remember when I first brought my golden retriever, Max, home— I quickly realized that my light-colored carpet and delicate furniture weren't going to survive his puppyhood!
Over the years, I've learned how to create a home that's both stylish and pet-friendly. Today, I'm sharing my best tips to help you design a space that works for everyone in your family, including your furry friends.
Choose Durable Materials
When it comes to pet-friendly home design, durability is key. I swapped out my light-colored carpet for dark, stain-resistant carpet that hides pet hair and accidents. For furniture, I look for pieces with washable covers or leather— it's easy to wipe clean.
One of my favorite finds? A sectional sofa with removable, washable covers. It's perfect for pet owners— when Max tracks in mud or my cat, Luna, sheds all over it, I can just throw the covers in the wash. No more stressing about pet hair and stains!
Create a Pet Zone
Every pet needs a space of their own. I created a pet zone in my living room with a comfortable bed for Max, a scratching post for Luna, and a few of their favorite toys. It gives them a place to relax that's all their own.
I also added a small water bowl and food dishes in this area, and I use a placemat to catch any spills. It keeps their area clean and contained, and it makes feeding time more organized.
Think About Flooring
Flooring is one of the most important considerations for pet owners. Hardwood floors are beautiful, but they can be scratched by pet nails. I opted for luxury vinyl plank flooring in my kitchen and entryway— it looks like hardwood but is scratch-resistant and waterproof.
In areas where I wanted something softer, like my living room, I chose a low-pile carpet in a dark color that hides pet hair well. Avoid high-pile carpets, which can trap dirt and allergens.
Keep It Safe
Safety is also important when designing a pet-friendly home. I make sure to keep all hazardous items, like cleaning products and certain plants, out of reach. I also use pet gates to keep Max and Luna out of certain areas of the house when I'm not around.
Choose pet-safe plants, like spider plants or Boston ferns, and avoid ones that are toxic to pets, like lilies or azaleas. A little research can go a long way in keeping your pets safe and happy!
Designing a pet-friendly home is about finding the perfect balance of style, durability, and safety. By focusing on durable materials, creating dedicated pet zones, and keeping your space safe, you can create a home that works for everyone in your family— humans and pets alike. Happy designing!
